May 2018 – Disability Awareness Month

May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month and as we enter the last week of the campaign, we have seen some excellent press coverage, including an hour-long radio show on an affiliate station of National Public Radio. I just wanted to share a few of the highlights with you to show what an outstanding job the Council for Disability Awareness (CDA) has done.

Below are the links to the two blogs and the MPBN program that Carol Harnett (President of the CDA) appeared on, together with Cathy Liston from Sun Life and David Burke from Mass Mutual.

As some of you may know, The Claim Lab is working very closely with the Research Group inside the CDA, and we are very pleased to be involved in some of their interesting projects.

At the start of this year we helped the CDA launch the Research Group to provide analytical services to member companies and to help the industry understand a few vital statistics.

Believe it or not, there has been very poor data on the percentage of the US population who actually have disability insurance coverage, and this seemed like a great starting point, see details below!

If your company is based in the United States and is not a member of the CDA, I would highly recommend talking to Carol about their work.

“How Many Families have Disability Insurance Coverage?”

This first link is to a blog by Fred Schott of the Council for Disability Awareness. This gives us a better understanding of the level of Disability Insurance coverage in the US workforce. Click Here.

In this second article we analyze this from a different perceptive, but one that is equally alarming, in a blog from
Andrew Melnyk, Chief Economist & Vice President of Research, American Council of Life Insurers. Click Here.

This last link is to a pod cast from the Maine Public Radio show on which Carol Harnett appeared together with other industry representatives.Click Here.
